Cuban Salsa: Corona con Coca-Cola

Just like we have several good Coca-Cola variations starting from the Gancho DQN, we have several good Coca-Cola variations starting from the Corona DQN. Starting from the Corona position is not common. I know of no classic moves where “Corona DQN Coca-Cola” plays an important role.

But a few weeks ago I suddenly say an example of going from Corona into Coca-Cola por Detrás around the Lead. It looked so natural and elegant that one can only wonder why Corono into Coca-Cola is not that common. I immediately started exploring different variations.

Here are the first three:

  1. Corona into Coca-Cola por Detrás
  2. Corono into Coca-Cola Avanza
  3. Corono into Coca-Cola Triple

These three options are “straight forward”. At least for me, since these three options I also use from DQN without the Corona, and the same three options from e.g. Panqué. There are most likely several other good variations of Corona into “Coca-Cola” just waiting to be discovered.

Corona Coca-Cola por Detrás

This option is not only elegant and natural. It is easier than the classic way to do Dile Que No con Coca-Cola por Detrás. Corono into Coca-Cola por Detrás might be the easiest of all Coca-Cola figures in left turning motion. Starting from the Corona position, it is simply so easy to lead the Follow into the Coca-Cola turn. Probably because it is two handed all the way.

Corona into Coca-Cola Avanza

This figure is difficult to do properly. As the Follow finishes the Coca-Cola turn on “5-6-7”, she must bring her right foot all around to step forward on “1”. Many Follows fail to do that and end up with a trailing step “1” that is not infront of stap “7” but behind it!

I use “Avanza” variations of turns a lot both for the continuation of Vacilala Double and for Coca-Cola. I sometimes think of this technique as “Bull fighter” or even Toreador Styling. There is only one caveat: It takes a good Follow that knows how to turn. The technique gives me no pleasure if the Follow only survives it not looking too bad.

But when Toreador Styling works with a Follow, I am likely to use it a couple of times in every dance.

Corono into Coca-Cola Triple

I like to use Coca-Cola Triple. In left turning motion it is too difficult. It is hard to come by a Follow that can do a perfect Coca-Cola Double in left turning motion. So doing a Coca-Cola Triple in left turning motion is not realistic in true social dancing. But it is of cause possible in choreographed show dancing or with a training partner.

But multiple Coca-Cola turns are easy in right turning motion because they only need to be 270 degrees on a curved line. For that reason I often call these Coca-Cola turns for Coca-Cola Light.

Most often a Coca-Cola Double or Triple in right turning motion starts with an Enchufla instead of a Coca-Cola. It feels natural and is much easier to lead. Coca-Cola turns on “2-3-5” are not common and takes a good Follow.

Starting with Enchufla is not necessarily “Plan B” because the Follow isn’t good enough to do a real Coca-Cola Light on “2-3-5”. Starting with Enchufla often works better in many situations no matter the level of the Follow.

When doing a Coca Triple I often start with a normal left turning Coca-Cola and make the Follow continue into right turning motion with Enchufla and then Coca-Cola Light. After Coca-Cola Light it is relatively easy to add another Coca-Cola Light or more giving us a “Coca-Cola Light Continudo”. I don’t do that in this tutorial.

In the version I use in the video clip “Corona into Coca-Cola Triple” I don’t use an Enchufla in the middle. I use three Coca-Cola turns: A left turning Coca-Cola followed by two times Coca-Cola Light. In another video I might go for another variation.
